Can you open Illustrator files in affinity designer? - Using the Affinity Software Suite
When you have finished editing the Illustrator file, you can export it back to the AI format. Corel also makes Paint Shop Pro , the Photoshop alternative. This app can open and save AI files natively but is generally less suitable for vector graphics work. Sketch is a Mac-only design suite and it's among the best vector software for Mac designers on a budget. If you're looking to open and edit AI files on a Mac, it's a viable choice.
The program has limited native support for Illustrator files. You can open them as you would any other file, but they will only be displayed as a single flattened layer.
This is the equivalent of opening it in Photoshop, and means the image is not editable. Select the file on your computer and add PDF to the end of the filename.
Drag it into Sketch to get an editable image. Your results here may depend on the complexity of the file, however. Since you cannot save files in the AI format, this also represents the best way of ensuring your edited file can be reopened in Illustrator in the future. Download: Sketch Free trial available. Opening any proprietary file outside of the app for which it was intended can produce mixed results.
It's the same when you open a PSD file without Photoshop. But apart from a few limitations, support for AI files is generally pretty good. In fact, while Illustrator is still the industry standard, more casual users don't really need it. Highlight the file and hit F2 on your keyboard. But on the other hand, it could work with CS5, but not with CS6… because not using, reading, recognizing, the same version of svg … With a light document, having a very few layers, the best is probably to copy and paste layer by layer, with a large rectangle around all elements to be copied to ensure their positioning.
Even if I release the clipping mask, the objects are ineditable. I was excited about this method because — like you said — I have clients that would want the file saved as. A single stroke outline applied in Affinity is converted into a shape with an outer and inner line, plus everything is grouped into a million groups and subgroups, which would make it awkward — at least — for anyone to edit.
It is that the PDf file loses all the layers created in AD, and in AI there is only one layer where all the elements contained in the creation are gathered. But indeed, everything remains editable, even if you lose all the advantages of working with layers. I tried this, and it seemed to work at first glance.
I opened an Adobe Illustrator file in Affinity Designer. Then I saved it as a Designer file. Then I changed the suffix from. Then I tried to open that file in Illustrator.
It opened fine… but the layer structure was destroyed. Every item many dozens was placed inside a single layer, rather then being distributed among about two dozen layers. All the items came across, but none of the carefully-designed layers I had set up in Illustrator, originally were present. Any ideas? Am I doing something wrong?

Fortunately, PDFs and AIs are very similar file types and it only takes a minute or two to convert one to the other. Then you simply need to change the extension on the name from. PDF to. Once this is complete—as long as Illustrator is already installed on your computer—you should be able to simply double-click the file and open it in Illustrator.
